Derby Winner!

Ok, this is Baden. The other day, Parker and I went out ice fishing. We started out on Fire Lake and as we were looking for a spot, couldn't get access to the area we wanted to fish, so went to a different lake. Mirror Lake has been a pretty good lake for us. As we were driving into the parking lot, there was a huge sign up that said KIDS FISHING DERBY TODAY! How awesome is that! We had no idea that they were having anything. The lake was covered with kids, ice rods, parents, and lots of bystanders. The Lions Club had put it together and registration was free. So we said hey why not. As we were signing up for the event, the boy mentioned that it had been pretty slow but that there were a few fish coming in here and there. Parker is 4 and so we registered him into the 1-4 year old class. Just as we were finishing there was a snowmachine that pulled up and was giving rides to different parts of the lake. We went over to the opposite side of the lake and there were pre-drilled holes there for us to fish. When we got there, we found out that there was only about 15 minutes left in the derby. Well, I thought maybe we can at least get a nibble so that Parker would have a chance have a little action. Well, about 5 minutes into it, using my special bait, Pautskes Balls o Fire salmon eggs, wham! Parker nailed an 11 inch rainbow! He was extatic! We pulled it out and it was just barely hooked. In fact I used the same bait to throw back down in the hole. After a few seconds, a couple more fish swarmed. I was watching them play with the bait for alittle bit and then when he took it we hooked and pulled the next one out at 11.5 inches. I really didn't think much of it at first. Since we had caught them so easily, I assumed that there were probably several like that especially since they were nearly the same size. Well about that time it ended and we hiked back to the weigh in. It had been so soon since we signed in they still recognized us. We measured them out and found that we had the largest fish in Parkers class! In fact we were only 1 inch behind the biggest fish of the day! Well come to find out, we won a $30 gift certificate to a local sporting goods store. I took parker in and he decided that he really wanted an ice rod like Dads! It was a little more than the gift certificate, but it fit Parker and he told me, "DAD, if you get this for me I will go fishing with you every day!" How can you resist that! Well, we are looking forward to our next trip and we will keep everyone informed.

Holy crap Parker! Good job! Way to show up all those kids! **thumbs up*** I wouldn't be able to resist him either if he said he'd go ice fishin' with me every day! He'll probably never forget that!

That is such a cool experience, Baden! Parker has such a great dad to take him ice fishing even when there's only 15 min. left in the event! I still find it hard to believe he won it, too!
