Dipnetting: Kasilof River

For those of you who have never heard of "dipnetting", let me explain. As an alaskan resident you are allowed to use a net up to 5 feet in diameter to catch salmon at certain times and locations for subsistance. You can net from the shore or from a boat. Your limit is determined by household size. Our limit this year was 65, but we were happy with 44:) Its pretty fun if the fish are running and the weather is good. And it is ALWAYS more fun if you have good company. Brian, Lorna and Daphne came to slay fish too! Baden is not in any of the pictures because he is obsessive(he would say "determined") and stayed in the river pretty much the whole time. I went down to the water a couple of times to help out, but when the tide was low it was really muddy and if I stood still too long I would get stuck. Which is actually a scary thing in Alaska because you hear about people getting stuck in mud flats and how they died because they couldn't get out before the tide came in.
Parker was so funny. When I told him we were going to the beach he asked, " Is there a shop with hats and kites and icecream?" "No" I replied." But, we can bring a beach ball." He was satisfied with that, and thank goodness because I didn't have the heart to tell him that it was gonna stink like fish, there would be fish guts and heads all over, and that we would have to dodge seagull poo.

I have NO idea why, but Wyatt decided to try eating a piece of burned wood from an old fire pit. Needless to say, he didn't really like it all that much.

Brian and Parker built a sand castle, or should I say Brian built a sandcastle :) Using his construction experience he even added a mote.

Sadly, it was destroyed about two seconds after it was done.
Poor Wyatt was so tired that he fell asleep eating fruitsnacks.
He just slumped over and that was it.
The boys did have fun camping even though it doesn't look like it. We showed up at one of our campsites at midnight and had to set up our tent in the pouring rain so we were all pretty tired (and cranky!) except for Baden ,who kept saying "Isn't this fun!?" I think he was preparing the boys for future rainy campouts with the scouts.

That was the cutest post! That is hilarious about Wyatt eating that burnt wood! I laughed so hard over that. Your family is so cute Em! I can totally hear Baden all enthused telling everyone "Isn't it fun?!" That boy cracks me up!

What great pioneers you all would make. Riley and I will dream of all the Salmon you get to eat. I wonder if Wyatt's stick tasted like burnt hot dog. I'm glad you all had fun, it always makes me feel a little left out but not when I hear about midnight rains storms and trying to set up camp.
